When I used to show up for work at our local jail, I knew things were dangerous and worked very hard to ensure me and my fellow officers were not put in any positions where we could be severely hurt. The population of inmates in our facility has doubled in the last few years, yet my staff remains basically the same size. That means we have to make use of the latest in technology to help us keep the facility running smoothly.
The day we got to meet with the team from Securus Technologies was one that changed how we deal with inmates moving forward. These inmates are constantly looking for ways to game the system and get the things they need inside. While some are looking for drugs, others are on the search for weapons to use on other inmates and even my team. These inmates are more difficult to stay ahead of because they are always working the angles.
Securus Technologies developed a newer-style monitoring system that is used in place of the traditional jail house phones. The LBS software is able to replace a number of officers who were trapped in a small call center, and now scans those calls for verbiage on weapons and drugs for the team. When chatter is detected, my team will immediately get that alert and get moving to take action. Securus Technologies already has this exact same system in a few thousand jails helping to give officers a chance to regain a degree of order.
Now we are still in shock each time the LBS software picks up a conversation about inmates using drugs, building weapons, or getting people on the outside to risk their own freedom by smuggling in different types of contraband that the inmates are desperately in search of.
