For 30 years, Iowa native David McDonald has risen through the ranks of food services giant the OSI Group. When McDonald graduated from Iowa State University with his bachelor’s degree in animal science 1987, he was hired by the OSI Group as a project manager. He proved to be such a fast learner and a valuable asset to the company that he rapidly worked his way through the organization. Currently, David McDonald serves as the OSI Group’s president and chief operating officer. Having been raised on a farm may have played a role in McDonald’s ability to acquit himself well in the food services industry.
David McDonald has a wide array of valuable skills. They include a background in industry specific skills like strategic planning, food safety, product development and supply chain management. He also has expertise in inventory management, marketing strategy, agribusiness, food science, budgets, operations management and process improvement. These skills and the many others David McDonald possesses, as well as his continuous improvement of the OSI Group’s systems and procedures, are all part of the reason the company has given him positions that carried with them increasing responsibilities.
Even though David McDonald graduated from Iowa State University more than 30 years ago, he still remains very much involved with the school. The two oldest of his 6 children attend the university. McDonald is also active in ISU’s Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative, has taken ISU students to visit the OSI facilities in China and has helped set up future internship opportunities. He has also donated to the scholarship fund of Alpha Gamma Rho, the fraternity he joined at Iowa State University State University. In 2004, David McDonald was given the Young Alumni Award by the ISU Alumni Association.
An important part of the work David McDonald does is with the logistics team in keeping things flowing smoothly. This is important for the OSI Group to keep abreast of the constantly evolving international food service industry. McDonald played a vital role in the OSI Group’s global expansion. That includes the recent acquisition of the Dutch food company Baho Foods, as well as Flagship Europe, to improve the OSI Group’s presence in Europe. McDonald also played a big part in setting up the company’s 10 processing facilities in China over the past 20 years. With the help of David McDonald the OSI Group is now the largest poultry processor in China.
